Position Title: Police Officer
The Independence Police Department is currently hiring for the position of Police Officer. Candidates are required to complete the NTN Frontline National Exam and the Personal History Questionnaire by August 23rd, 2024, to proceed in the hiring process.

Vision: 20/20 with corrective lenses
College: Not required, but extra credit is given
Academy Certification: OPOTA certificate preferred; extra credit points awarded for academy cadets or those with an OPOTA certificate
Prior Experience: Not required
Necessary Certifications: OPOTA certification, either completed or with a completion date. If the certificate is expired, the department will cover the cost of the OPOTA refresher course but not the entire academy.
Additional Requirements: Must complete and pass the OPOTA physical agility test for the appropriate age bracket.

Examination Instructions for 2024 - Position of Police Patrol Officer:
The Competitive Examination for the position of Police Patrol Officer in the City of Independence will consist of three parts:
Written Test: This will be conducted from June 24, 2024, to August 23, 2024, at a National Testing Network (NTN) location. The score from this test accounts for 50% of the total grade.
Physical Agility Test: This will be administered at a later date in the City of Independence, following OPOTA state fitness standards.
Oral Board Interview: Selected candidates will participate in an interview with high-ranking department officials. The score from this interview accounts for 50% of the total grade.
Eligibility Criteria:
U.S. citizenship or in the process of becoming a citizen
Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of original appointment and not older than 35 years of age
High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
Good physical and mental health, moral character, and habits
Valid driver's license
Application Process:
Applications must be submitted to the National Testing Network (NTN) by August 23, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. Applicants who do not complete the application form correctly, provide false information, or fail to include all required information will be disqualified.
Extra Credit Opportunities:
To receive extra credit, candidates must provide documentation before the Physical Agility Test date. The maximum extra credit that can be earned is 20 points, and it is only applied after achieving the minimum passing grade on the written test.
Military Credit: 5 points for applicants with a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD214)
Certified OPOTA Certificate or Academy Credit: 5 points for an OPOTA certificate (current or expired within 1 year), and 2 points for those currently enrolled in a police academy
Independence Employee Credit: 5 points for current employees of the City of Independence with at least one full calendar year of service
College Credit: 2 points for a two-year associate degree and an additional 2 points for a four-year bachelor's degree (maximum of 4 points)
Job Description:
General Purpose:
Police Officers report to Sergeants and Lieutenants and are responsible for protecting life, health, and property, preventing and detecting crimes, preserving public peace, protecting citizens' rights, and assisting in problem identification and resolution.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patrol assigned zones in a police vehicle or on foot
Monitor and observe traffic flow, operating mechanical and electronic equipment (e.g., radar, radio, breathalyzer, weaponry, computers)
Enforce laws by identifying violators, issuing citations, making arrests, and appearing in court
Investigate complaints and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, accidents, and disasters
Secure crime scenes, administer first aid, and request support from appropriate agencies
Monitor prisoner behavior and perform necessary jail functions
Serve as the first line of communication with the public, providing information and assisting in problem resolution
Perform other duties as directed
The Independence Police Department offers full testing services for the Police Patrol Officer position through the National Testing Network (NTN). Upon completing the scheduled exam, scores are automatically forwarded to the Independence Police Department. Candidates who pass the entry-level exam will be considered for the eligibility list, and department personnel will contact candidates to participate in further stages of the selection process.
