Job Description

Solidworks Designer/Drafter (In-Office Position)

About SMP Engineering:
In a nutshell, we work on the hard stuff. Our customers come to us to quickly engineer, cost-effective solutions to a wide range of technical challenges. These include product development and design manufacturing/factory automation and everything in between. A project like this requires us to be fast and accurate since time lost getting to the market reduces profits. We take these projects from the concept phase all the way to the delivery of production hardware to the end customer. To do this, we are constantly looking for the best engineering talent.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented SolidWorks Designer/Drafter to join our dynamic design team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering design principles, a comprehensive understanding of SolidWorks software, and a proven track record of translating conceptual ideas into precise technical drawings and models. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring creative designs to life.

Responsibilities:

Design and Modeling:

  • Utilize SolidWorks software to create 2D and 3D models, assemblies, and drawings based on project requirements, specifications, and sheet metal design guidelines.
  • Develop and modify complex designs, ensuring accuracy, functionality, and adherence to industry standards.

Drafting and Documentation:

  • Generate detailed technical drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and materials, for use in manufacturing and production processes.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other stakeholders to clarify design intent and incorporate necessary changes into documentation.

Design Optimization:

  • Analyze designs for potential improvements in terms of efficiency, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide input on design changes that optimize performance and functionality while adhering to project objectives.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, product managers, and manufacturing personnel, to ensure seamless integration of design concepts and project requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide valuable insights to improve designs and resolve challenges.

Quality Control:

  • Perform rigorous checks on designs, models, and drawings to maintain accuracy, consistency, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Identify and rectify discrepancies or errors in designs to ensure high-quality deliverables.

Project Management:

  • Manage multiple design projects concurrently, prioritize tasks, and meet project deadlines.
  • Communicate progress, updates, and potential roadblocks to project managers and team members.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks software with a demonstrated ability to create intricate 2D and 3D designs and assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and materials selection.
  • Experience in drafting and creating technical drawings with precision and accuracy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically about design challenges.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a keen eye for identifying design inconsistencies and errors.
  • Prior experience in product design, engineering, or a related field is a plus.
  • Knowledge of other CAD software and tools is beneficial.

Application Process:

Interested candidates are invited to submit their resume, portfolio showcasing relevant SolidWorks projects, and a cover letter detailing their experience and motivation for the position. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview to discuss their qualifications and potential contributions to our design team. We look forward to welcoming a dedicated SolidWorks Designer/Drafter to our creative environment.
